Pork crackling is a food that I adore, but I do hesitate before ordering it because too often, to get the amazing crunchy crackling, you have to put up with overly fatty or chewy pork belly. I had no such misgivings when ordering the roasted pork roll at the Chatswood branch of the Bavarian Bier Cafe, having already tried it during a work lunch at the city Bavarian. My eyes lit up when the thin slices of roast pork, bordered with golden-brown crackling, encased in a soft brioche bun and topped with lime aioli and fried onions arrived at our table.
The crackling was perfect, with a solid crunch and the pork was tender with just the right amount of fat. All elements of the roll worked well together, with the zesty aioli and spiced slaw cutting through the richness of the pork, and the crisp onion tendrils adding even more texture. I liked the gravy that came with the roll; it had a hint of beer and was delicious with the roll and the chips.
My boyfriend was very satisfied with his enormous Swiss schnitzel that was smothered in ham and melted cheese, and he polished it off very quickly. Apologies for the blurry photo; I took the shot very quickly and by the time I checked it, my boyfriend had already started digging in!
I know it’s traditional to order beer at the Bavarian, but this time I went with the Red Velvet cocktail which was super sweet and fruity – just what I look for in a drink!
TL;DR:
- If you love pork crackling, you will love the roast pork roll!
- Consistently tasty food and cheerful, friendly service
