The same thought crosses my mind every Sunday morning at about 9:30am: “Why am I doing this to myself?” Breathless, sweaty and with seriously sore quads and biceps, I am halfway through an Accelerate session at Core Candy, a boutique, New York City inspired fitness studio that opened in South Yarra in late 2014.
Accelerate is just one of the classes offered at Core Candy, and is a high intensity interval training (HIIT) workout consisting of short, intense exercise bursts followed by active recovery. I’ve done a few of these classes already and none of them have been the same, which is ideal for someone with a short attention span who gets bored easily (long runs are not for me!). The creative classes include exercise combos involving kettlebells, medicine balls, boxes and the intriguing Pilates Springboard, which ensures that your body is being constantly challenged. Despite the next day soreness, Accelerate is definitely addictive!
The class that I was really keen on trying out was Pilates Springboard, which is modelled on an apparatus created by Joseph Pilates. The Springboard itself is a board attached to the wall, lined on either side with eyelets to which springs can be hooked into. The springs at the other end are attached to handles/loops or wooden rods, which allow you to perform traditional Pilates movements with the added resistance and stability workout provided by the springs. This class is a twist on a regular Pilates or Reformer class, so if you’re looking for something different that’s not offered anywhere else, Springboard is for you. It really works your core and muscles, and by adjusting the level of the springs, you can increase or decrease the difficulty – don’t be surprised if you start to shake uncontrollably while you’re doing the moves!
Barre classes have been all the rage for a couple of years, and Core Candy’s version is an excellent example. Movements are based on ballet and pilates, but you don’t need to be a dancer to attend – and to feel the burn! Light weights, therabands and of course, the barre, are used in the class, resulting in a high intensity, low impact workout that will (eventually) give you long, lean, ballerina muscles!
The classes are small, which allows for personalised attention and adjustment from the instructors, who are fabulous, super chirpy and enthusiastic, even on a Sunday morning! The studio itself is gorgeous, with spacious, light-filled workout rooms; and the exposed brick walls definitely give it that air of NYC cool. In a nice touch, the changeroom is stocked with complimentary toiletries, as well as bobby pins and hair elastics (so handy – I’m always losing bobby pins!).
I really love that Core Candy offers such a variety of interesting classes, so that no matter what mood you’re in, there’s a class for you. Feel like going hard? Smash out a session of Accelerate. Fancy trying something different to your normal Pilates class? Springboard might be for you. Looking for something a little more chilled? Take it to the Barre.
If you’re looking to try out Core Candy, they offer a great intro deal – $50 for 2 weeks of classes – book online or on their app (the app is so convenient – it’s super easy to book classes anywhere, anytime).
