Finding healthy savoury snacks has been something of a holy grail for me. My snack of choice: a pack of Kettle’s chilli chips (or really just about any chips!) is probably not something to be included in your daily intake, and with my wedding coming up, I’ve really been trying to clean up my diet. I stumbled upon David Lebovitz’s recipe for pistachio and chorizo cake which looked amazing, but as I was without a loaf tin, I decided to tweak the recipe and re-create it in muffin form.

Recipe Roadtest: Spicy One-Pot Quinoa and Chorizo

We usually go out for dinner on the weekend, so I tend not to do much cooking on Saturday or Sunday. However, this particular Saturday night, my fiancé was invited to a corporate event at the footy, which meant that I had a rare night at home. I decided to use this chance to cook up something new; and flicking through the pages of a Christmas present – Donna Hay’s Simple Dinners – I found a recipe for one-pot chorizo and cous cous. Continuing my healthy eating attempts, I substituted quinoa for cous cous and added in mushrooms for extra nutrients – but don’t worry, it still tastes delicious!

Attimo, Northbridge

I’ve often written about my love of garlic prawns and I have to tell you, I had probably the best garlic prawns I’ve had in a long time at Attimo, an Italian restaurant in Northbridge. The garlic and chilli infused olive oil was still bubbling when the iron dish was placed in front of me and the balance of flavours was incredible. Many restaurants either have too much oil or not enough garlic, but Attimo’s was the perfect blend of smooth, garlicky, spicy goodness and I ended up mopping up every last drop of the lovely sauce with the provided bread. The prawns themselves were juicy and tender and my only complaint was that there were not enough!

C1 Cafe, Chatswood

I was rather surprised when I read all the negative reviews of C1 Cafe, which is located in prime position on the ground floor of the Chatswood Chase shopping centre. We may have just been lucky, visiting late on a Monday morning for an early lunch when the cafe was quite empty. I wouldn’t say the service was outstanding, as we did have to regularly request more drinking water but the waitstaff were friendly enough and our food came out quite quickly. As I have frequently mentioned, I love anything garlic prawns, so I was immediately drawn to the prawn linguine with garlic and chilli.

Khao Pla, Chatswood

My birthday this year fell on a Monday. This is generally not an issue because I usually have a Chinese dinner banquet with my family and Chinese restaurants are open every day of the week. Unfortunately, my parents were overseas and it was decided that we would do my birthday dinner the day after. My attempts to find a restaurant for dinner with my boyfriend on the Monday were not promising to begin with. My first choice Thai restaurant was under new management and was closed on Mondays. My second choice Japanese restaurant was also closed on Mondays. Eventually, by virtue of it actually being open, we entered my third choice Khao Pla in Chatswood, and I have to say, I’m pretty glad we did. Continue reading
